Our office is in the heart of Downtown Seattle, in a historic building that has housed the YMCA since the 1930s. Not only does our building house our Association Office (corporate headquarters), but it's also home to some of our unique social service programs AND a membership facility (access is a staff benefit - swim a few laps before work, take a yoga class at lunch, do some laps on the track before you go home, if you like).

General Job Overview

Provides objective employee relations consultation services to staff and management. Consult on appropriate performance related topics, and other corrective actions in accordance with policy and procedures. Consult on day to day workplace issues such as legal compliance (e.g., ADA, FMLA, harassment, etc.) conflict resolution, and employee satisfaction. Function as a liaison between staff employees and management. Depending on circumstances will lead investigations; provides guidance and recommendations for problem resolution.

Requirements

Reporting to the Employee Relations Director, you will be responsible for providing objective employee relations consultation services, helping to promote productive and positive relationships between managers, employees, and co-workers. You will be responsible for following policies and procedures in a consistent and equitable manner to ensure employees are treated fairly and actions are taken in compliance with company policies and government regulations. Duties will include:

  1. Assists in resolving employee relations issues and facilitating conflict resolution between employees and supervisors.
  2. Provides pro-active coaching to supervisors.
  3. Promptly investigates employee complaints regarding harassment, discrimination, unfair treatment, etc.
  4. Conducts effective, thorough and objective conversations, meetings, interviews, and investigations. Utilizes independent judgment and best practices in conducting investigations and recommending resolutions for ER Director's approval; writes investigation summaries and reports.
  5. Works with management on employee performance issues, supports corrective action, coaches supervisors, and when necessary, prepares documentation for HR and legal review.
  6. Provides general guidance to supervisors regarding labor and employment law compliance, wage/hour laws, sexual harassment, and discrimination prevention, etc.
  7. Manages ADA accommodation requests.
  8. Manages verification of employment and unemployment processes.
  9. Maintains knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks, and ensuring compliance.
  10. Works closely with management and employees to improve working relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention.
  11. Responds to written and verbal inquiries from a variety of internal and external sources.
  12. Conducts and documents exit interviews.
  13. Partners with outside counsel and agencies when needed.
  14. Monitors and maintains complaint tracking system.
  15. Conducts trainings as needed for supervisors and employees.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

 

  • Bachelor's degree in business, human resources, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of employee relations experience
  • Current working knowledge of employment law and regulations including Title VII, FMLA, ADA, FLSA, EEO, unemployment, and labor relations.
  • Excellent negotiation and relational skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain strict confidentiality, and make decisions in an equitable and consistent manner.
  • Ability to manage and resolve numerous issues on a variety of topics daily.
  • Must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups and working with all levels of an organization.
  • Must be organized and detail oriented.
  • Must be comfortable working with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must have a professional, personable, and ethical demeanor, making excellent customer service a high priority.
