The Position:

The Vice President, Human Resources (VPHR) will report directly to the President of Sperry. The role is responsible for effective operation of the Company’s global human resources activity. The role supervises and provides consultation to management on strategic staffing plans such as recruiting, retention, compensation, benefits, training and development, labor relations etc. The goal is continuously improving employee engagement measured by productivity and satisfaction.  The VPHR is a member of the senior management team and is responsible for leading and partnering with other managers in keeping human capital initiatives and processes aligned with the business model and developing and achieving the business strategy.  This is a global position with a particular need to recognize and work within country and region-specific legal and cultural human resource norms. The main strategic objectives to be planned for managed by this role from the outset are:

1) Develop and implement the talent and leadership strategy, ensuring the organization has the appropriate level of leadership skills and succession plans to execute on its plans for growth.

2) Drive field personnel operations engagement and reliability, especially in North America, with effective employee recruiting, training and retention programs.  All aspects to be viewed and assessed regularly with Key Performance Indicator (KPI) metrics.

3) Meet company targets for recruiting and engaging highly technical and innovative leaders, engineers, data scientists, software professionals, etc., required to accomplish the Company’s technology roadmap.

4) Ensure effective human resource management, including from a legal perspective in all counties and regions of the business.

Corresponding Duties and Tactical Responsibilities:

·         Overseeing the organization’s recruitment, interview, selection, and hiring processes, with the support of an in-house recruiter, HR manager, and other personnel, as needed

·         Structuring and driving regular, high-impact employee communications

·         Creating and delivering briefings to executives and shareholders

·         Planning and implementing employee benefit, payroll, health and safety programs

·         Facilitating the implementation of standardized human resource processes

·         Adhering to all internal policies and legal standards

·         Structuring effective and attractive compensation, benefits, and incentive programs to attract and retain top talent

·         Selecting, designing, integrating and implementing human resource information systems (HRIS) for better efficiency as required, including analyzing and “making the case”  for updating antiquated systems

·         Recommending new and improved measures for performance evaluations

·         Managing any third parties to which HR functions have been outsourced

Leadership Engagement:

·         Participating in key decisions as a member of the executive management team

·         Maintaining in-depth relations with all members of the management team

·         Implementing operational best practices

·         Overseeing the SperryCares program, which supports and highlights the good works and voluntary services Sperry employees provide for the benefit of our communities, our families, and the environment.

·         Participating and supporting the Sperry Action for Excellence (SAFE) program and our “core value” dedication to employee and railroad safety

Desired Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have a master’s degree in human resources and/or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 10+ years of progressively responsible HR experience for a major company or division of a large corporation.  Should have experience in partnering with an executive team, and have a high level of written and oral communication skills. The candidate should demonstrate through prior experiences a strong sense of ownership to improve the business, critical thinking ability, and the characteristics and actions of a team player.  Prior background in a client service industry is critical; experience with railroad, transportation, or non-destructive service companies will be considered a plus.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following criteria:

·         Advanced degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related fields

·         Significant HR professional experience, including previous experience working as a HR Director or higher for 5+ years

·         Recognized Human Resources Accreditation or Certification

·         Experience working in Non-Union and Union labor environments

·         In-depth knowledge about domestic and international HR processes, employment legislation, and legal regulations

·         Understanding and experience with employer branding and recruitment

·         Marketing strategies, including measuring employee satisfaction

·         Excellent knowledge of all aspects of HR management and business systems

Location/Working Conditions:
The VPHR role resides at the Company’s new Shelton, CT headquarters, which consolidated operations among multiple facilities and fully opened in 2019.  Fairly extensive travel to Company operations is required, estimated at a minimum of 25% including international travel. Peer management team employees include vice president level employees in Finance, Technology, Business Development and Risk Management.
